In 2023 Cape Town was voted, “best city in the world to visit”.

It is a city that sits in the shadow of Table Mountain with pristine beaches and rolling vineyards,

but the most advanced and broad-based economy on the continent it is not without a dire downside.

It has been 30 years since Nelson Mandela’s ruling African National Congress took power after 300 years of Colonialism and Apartheid.

With a joblessness rate of 32.9% (one of the highest in the world) the country is in a situation that a UN report has called, “a ticking time bomb.”

Income inequality is the worst in the world.

44% of South Africans receive government benefits. There are daily rolling power cuts. A failing economy that worries foreign investments.  Over the last decade the average South African is 23% poorer than they were before. Since 2000, over 400,000 South Africans have left the country and are not planning on coming home.

What is the future of South Africa and has Mandela’s dream in 1994 to, “build a better life for all”- become just that?
